Police complaint and compensation papers for hit and run victims in India

Hit and run, India

Rs 2,00,000 for a death. Rs 50,000 for a grievous injury. Paid even when the driver is never found.

That money is the Hit and Run Motor Accidents Compensation Scheme 2022. It does not ask you to catch the driver or sue anybody, and it sets no deadline. It asks for an FIR and the claim papers in the right form. This site writes the complaint that becomes the FIR, and the claim, free, in about ten minutes.

What the scheme pays, and how few people ask for it

  • Rs 2,00,000 When someone dies

    Paid to the family under the Hit and Run Motor Accidents Compensation Scheme 2022, made under section 161 of the Motor Vehicles Act. The driver never has to be caught.

  • Rs 50,000 For a grievous injury

    Paid to you under the same scheme. A fracture, a head injury, anything a doctor records as grievous hurt. You do not have to sue anyone, and it is not insurance.

  • 205 Claims filed in the whole country in a year

    That is 2022-23, against tens of thousands of crashes that qualified. Almost everyone who missed out was stopped by the same thing: no FIR, and no Form I in the shape the Claims Enquiry Officer needs.

The Claims Enquiry Officer for your revenue sub-division enquires into the claim, and the Claims Settlement Commissioner sanctions it.

How it works

  1. Tell us what happened

    About ten minutes of plain questions. The plate if you caught it, where and when it happened, and what you remember. No account and no fee.

  2. Print the packet

    A complaint addressed to the station that covers the spot you were hit, the section 63(4) certificate that makes your video admissible, and the compensation claim itself.

  3. Chase it, with reminders

    Emails on day 3, day 7, day 15, day 30 and on, each one carrying the exact letter to send if nothing has moved. Every email links back to your report page. One tap there marks the FIR registered or the claim filed, and the reminders for that step stop. Closing or deleting the report stops them all.

Your files stay on your phone

Pick a file and your browser reads it here and works out its SHA-256 fingerprint, a 64-character code that changes if a single pixel changes. We keep the fingerprint, the filename and the size. The file itself is never sent to us, so keep the original safe. Your claim needs it, and we will never have a copy to give you back.

    What happens to this

    Your report goes into a private database. Nothing here becomes public. The only way back in is the link we email you, so keep that email.

    We do not send anything to the police for you. We cannot. You take the packet to the station or you call 112, and the police decide what to do with it.

    The report stays until you delete it, and the delete button on your report page removes all of it at once.

      Complaint to the station house officer

      You hand this in at the station that covers the spot you were hit, and it is what the police turn into your FIR.

    • Day 0

      Evidence certificate, BSA section 63(4)

      Signed with the fingerprint of every photo and video you kept, so a court can accept the files as genuine.

    • Day 3

      Letter to the SP or DCP, BNSS section 173(4)

      Sent when three days pass with no FIR. It puts your complaint in front of an officer who has to answer in writing.

    • Day 7

      Magistrate application, BNSS section 175(3)

      Asks a judicial magistrate to order the police to register the FIR and investigate.

    • Day 15

      RTI application

      Ten rupees gets you the FIR number, the investigating officer and what has actually been done, with a 30 day deadline attached.

    • Day 45

      Hit and Run Scheme 2022 claim, Form I

      The claim for Rs 2,00,000 for a death or Rs 50,000 for a grievous injury, filled out in Form I with the Form IV undertaking, addressed to the Claims Enquiry Officer for your revenue sub-division. The scheme sets no deadline, so day 45 is a nudge, not a cutoff.

    Track your report

    We email your report link the moment you file, to the address you gave us. Open that email and follow the link. It is the only way back in, which is also why anyone who has it can read your report, so keep it to yourself.

    If the email is not there, look in spam and in promotions first. If it is really gone, write to grievance@hitandrun.report from the same address you filed with.
