What this is

hitandrun.report takes what you tell us about a hit and run and gives you documents you can print, sign and hand in. It is free, and it is run privately.

What this is not

  • This is not a government website. We have no official status, no ministry behind us and no power to decide anything. We name government schemes and sections as facts, nothing more.
  • We do not file anything with the police. There is no way for us to do that, and any site that says otherwise is wrong. You take the packet to the station, or you call 112.
  • We are not your lawyer. The documents follow the law as we read it, and a lawyer may well draft yours better.
  • We cannot make the police register an FIR, and we cannot make anyone pay you.
  • We do not look up who owns a vehicle. That data is not available to us, and the person a vehicle is registered to is often not the person who was driving.

Your side of it

  • Tell the truth. You tick a box saying your account is true, and a false police complaint is an offence under section 248 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
  • Fingerprint only files you recorded or were given, and paste only links you have the right to share. Nothing you pick is uploaded, so keep the originals yourself.
  • Keep your report link private. Anyone who has it can read your report.
  • Do not use this to harass anyone. Reports that look like that get deleted.

Our side of it

We are an intermediary under section 79 of the Information Technology Act 2000. We do not read reports as they come in, because nothing is published and there is nothing to moderate. We act on a valid court or government order within 36 hours, and on a complaint through the grievance officer on the timelines set out in the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021.

Liability

The site is provided as it is. We are not liable for what the police, an insurer or a court does or does not do with your complaint. Indian law applies, and the courts at Gurugram, Haryana have jurisdiction.
